A few weeks ago I tackled my junk drawer as the first organization project in our new home. I figured by starting small, I’d get the ball rolling and I’d be inspired to organize and declutter other areas too. Well, I was right! I loved how the junk drawer turned out so much that I wanted the rest of my kitchen to fit in, too.
My small kitchen only has a few drawers, so there wasn’t a whole bunch to take care of besides silverware, large utensils, and some random gadgets. It was a quick project, but one that’s made such an improvement.
If you read my post about organizing the junk drawer, I’m sure you remember how I raved on and on about the clear, acrylic organizers I bought. I still love how versatile they are, so I went and bought a few more to organize all the other drawers in our kitchen.
Every organization project starts with taking everything out, giving it a deep clean, and then planning how things will go back. Usually, I just figure the organization as I go, but this time I needed very specific sized organizers, so I did all the planning beforehand.
I drew some quick sketches of the drawers that needed work and then determined which organizers I’d need to buy. Planning out my space before buying organizers is the best way to do this, hands down.
For the most part, I kept all items in the same drawers since we’ve got used to our system. I just combined some items and was able to add more since I made space with decluttering.
I can’t say too much more about organizing drawers, so let’s just get on to the before and after…
Here’s the before of the top drawer by our sink, the silverware drawer:
And the after. This one was simple, I just got a new drawer organizer which made room for serving utensils.
The next drawer down we use for larger tools and measuring cups, etc. Before:
This drawer was the worst in my opinion, so an easy fix was getting rid of tools we don’t use and minimizing what’s in here. Things like the turkey baster and meat carving set were moved with our turkey roasting pan and some utensils got moved to other drawers.
The third drawer down has more tools and larger items since this drawer is a little deeper.
I got rid of all those serving utensils since we have another set, moved the shaker to our alcohol cabinet, and made room for new dishcloths and less used tools.
Lastly, the bottom drawer is for all of our baggies, saran wrap, and all that stuff. It’s almost impossible to organize these in a “Pinterest worthy” way because they’re all different colors, shapes
The only change here was a little reorganization and adding a container for these new metal clips I got.
Lastly, over by our
This was another easy fix. I just used a large organizer to hold our utensils and decluttered the hand towels that didn’t need to be over here.
It wasn’t a challenging organization project, but it was a rewarding one for sure! Even Alex said something along the lines of, “what the heck, why is this drawer so nice?”
